Making biocidal products available on the market involves the need to comply with the requirements of Regulation 528/2012. This document sets out the necessary documents to be provided for the registration of biocidal products, and among many of them, particular emphasis is placed on the SDS (old name MSDS).
The SDS is an essential document for any substance made available on the market (cosmetics/household chemicals/biocidal products/dietary supplements). This document is transmitted in the so-called supply chain between the supplier/manufacturer and the downstream user. The obligation to prepare an SDS for a substance/product/mixture results from Article 31 of the REACH Regulation (Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006).
The SDS is a collection of information on the origin, composition and physical and chemical properties of a substance or mixture. According to the legislation in force, each SDS should consist of 16 sections, in which the potential hazards arising from the use of the substance/mixture, the management of risks arising from contact with hazardous substances or mixtures, the methods of minimising risks are described in detail. Furthermore, the SDS also contains information on what to do if a hazardous situation arises.
Much of the information contained in the SDS goes on the label of biocidal products, so it is important to prepare it thoroughly.
